Paragliding Trip Castejon de Sos

The Paragliding Trip Castejón de Sos takes place in the Benasque Valley, possibly the best flying site in Spain!

The Benasque Valley has the highest number of peaks over 3000 meters of altitude. The Aneto (3,404 meters), the highest of the Pyrenees, and others – like Posets, Maladetas, Perdiguero, etc. – are all in the surroundings. These special characteristics gives this valley its incomparable fantastic conditions for free flight.

Castejón de Sos has hosted a very large number of competitions, both national and international: World Championship, Tournaments for the PWC Series, British Open, Paragliding Championship of Spain, the Spanish League Tournaments, etc. The curriculum has earned the flight area the nickname “Mecca of Spanish Paragliding”.

It is also a valley where you can do many other (mountain) activities apart from paragliding: ultralight flights, rafting, hydro speed, canyoning, rock climbing, via ferrata, hiking, quad driving, horse riding, fishing, golf, etc.

That’s why it’s ideal to bring along the family for a few days of vacation. There is also a wide variety of accommodation: hotels, apartments, guesthouses, hostels, campings, etc.

What is the best time to go ?

From late spring through October are good dates to go flying .
You could try to fly earlier in the year, but possible you won’t be able to get to the higher takeoff points.

What level or experience is required?

Starting at level “0” all the way up to competition pilots.
It’s possible to do the Initiation Course in Castejón and, for those who have completed the Initiation Course, there is the opportunity to continue learning through the Progression Course or even Thermal Flight.

Where do I sleep ?

In Castejón de Sos we dispose over a wide range of accommodations. Also: there is an extensive list on the city council’s website: www.castejondesos.es

You can also contact us to inform you about the best places or even to directly book the hotel for you.

How do I find the information about flights?

There are 3 glider schools in Castejón. They can inform you about what you need.
Of course, we recommend our own school: “Volar en Castejón” (Avenida El Real 28, phone 0034 647 20 60 32).
You can also turn to the tourist office, which is situated at the entrance of the town hall.

How I can get to the takeoffs areas?

There are 3 companies that have a lift service to the different takeoff areas:

  • “Parapente Volar en Castejón”
  • “Parapente Pirineos”
  • Camping “Alto Esera”

The trips up are every 2 hours (9, 11, 13 , 15, 17 and 19h) and usually cost about €10 per climb.

What services can you offer me?

  • Specialized paragliding shop
  • Information Office
  • Accommodation booking
  • Booking of alternative activities
  • Lifts to the Liri takeoff area
  • We can arrange daily tours so you can fly in all the areas. Lift seats in Castejón are limited and generally everyone simply goes up to Liri and ignores all other flight zones, which is a shame, because the other areas offer very nice flights and practically no-one goes there
  • Coaching and Advice before and during the (days of) flights
  • Courses for Beginners, Progression, Perfection, Thermal Flight, Cross Flight, etc.
  • Trips to the Luchon valley (French Pyrenees)

Flight Information

There is a significant number of flights in the valley.
Depending on the time of day you are flying, they are usually pretty varied, starting off in the morning hours as very calm descent flights.
From 12h pm the calm thermal air starts to flow.
At 13h or 14h pm the thermal currents get stronger and continue well into the early afternoon.
After 18h pm the thermals start to loose intensity, but smooth and stable thermal flights can still be made.

The takeoffs are generally very good; wide, long and with grass.

Castejón - broad takeoff area

The landing areas are also very good and spacious.
In the landing area of “El Raso” we must be cautious, because it’s used as an airfield for other aerial sports recreants and we must try not to land on or near the ultralight track (which is marked by white buoys along the center of the landing strip). We should be landing on the sides of these signals. If we landed on the runway, please leave immediately picking up your paraglider rapidly.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Being a mountain valley and due to the nature and location of the landing areas, it is possible that at noon the wind accelerates considerably.
Therefor we should be cautious with the wind at noon; landings can be turbulent.

Sometimes restitution can occur during the late afternoon in which case you have to know how to get down.

Being a south oriented valley, IT IS VERY DANGEROUS to fly with a strong Northern wind.
